Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema, has dismissed Ms. Mazuba Monze, the country’s High Commissioner to South Africa, following allegations of misconduct.
The decision, which has stirred significant public interest, comes after reports surfaced of an unusual incident at the Zambian Mission in Pretoria.
According to reports, Ms. Monze allegedly instructed a male staff member to perform a highly inappropriate task: shaving her private parts.
The staff member refused, citing that such a request was not only undiplomatic but also fell far outside the scope of his professional duties. In response, Ms. Monze allegedly accused the staff member of insubordination and terminated his employment.
The dismissed staff member, however, appealed the decision to Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Following an investigation into the matter, President Hichilema acted decisively by relieving Ms. Monze of her duties.
While the incident has drawn widespread criticism, some have suggested that the allegations may have been exaggerated or fabricated.
A Zambian national residing in South Africa has claimed that detractors of Ms. Monze orchestrated a campaign against her, spreading false allegations to tarnish her reputation.
Despite this defense, the President’s action underscores Zambia’s commitment to maintaining ethical conduct among its diplomatic representatives.
“The decision to dismiss Ms. Monze sends a strong message that misconduct of any form will not be tolerated within Zambia’s diplomatic service,” remarked a political analyst.
“It also reflects the government’s commitment to upholding the integrity of its institutions.”
Despite the dismissal, the incident remains a topic of debate in both Zambia and South Africa. Some see the swift action as a necessary step to preserve the country’s diplomatic standing, while others question the veracity of the allegations and the motives behind them.
