An Iowa woman was recently arrested for falsely reporting the man she was supposed to go on a date with to the police just because she “got cold feet” and didn’t know how to tell him.

18-year-old Sumaya Thomas was supposed to go on a romantic date with a man she had met through an online dating app, but when her date showed up on her doorstep on June 16, the young woman reportedly “got cold feet” and decided she didn’t want anything to do with her online match. Instead of simply ignoring him, making up some sort of excuse to cancel their date, or flat out telling the guy that she didn’t want to go out with him anymore, Thomas picked up the phone and called 911, making up a ridiculous story about the man at her door being her abusive ex with whom she was 7 months pregnant and asking police to have him removed from her property.

The North Liberty woman told the 911 operator that the man on her porch was threatening to “hit, punch, kick and stab her,” so a police car was dispatched to her location. Only when officers arrived at Sumaya Thomas’ house, they didn’t find this angry assailant banging on her door, but a calm-looking man leaving her property. When police stopped the man and asked him about his relationship with the 18-year-old woman, he said they had just met a week prior through a dating app and were supposed to go on a date that night.

According to an affidavit pertaining to this strange cases, “the conversation showed he was being honest and he really did just meet this female,” but the man’s alleged victim insisted that they had known each other for two years and even that she was pregnant with his baby. She claimed that he had been “abusive” throughout their relationship and had shown up on her doorstep threatening to cause her physical harm.

Police later discovered that Sumaya had deleted some of her texts with her date to cover her tracks, and after repeated questioning, the 18-year-old woman admitted that she had made the whole story up and that he was indeed a man she had recently met online.

According to the affidavit, Thomas “admitted to making these false reports because she got cold feet on meeting him,” explaining that she didn’t think officers would help her if she told them she just didn’t want to go on her scheduled date.

Sumaya Thomas was charged with two misdemeanor counts of False Report of Indictable Offense to Public Entity, and one count of False Report – 911 call, and was eventually released from jail, while her innocent date was held for about an hour after being apprehended by police.
