More than a week after the Secret Service discovered cocaine at the White House it appears Americans are no closer to receiving answers on how the illicit drug made its way into one of the most secure areas in the U.S.
What former officials told DailyMail.com is a ‘straightforward’ investigation has now entered its second week and the White House continues to brush off questions on the incident as President Joe Biden left the country Sunday for meetings in London ahead of the NATO Summit in Lithuania.
The White House evacuated with a hazmat situation last Sunday, July 2 when a uniformed USSS agent found cocaine in a lockbox for cell phones outside of secure meeting areas.
Since the discovery, there have been few questions answered on how the cocaine made its way into the White House and who the culprit could be.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre suggested during a briefing last week that it could have been a guest that left the drug in the cell phone cubby.
When reached by DailyMail.com for an update, the White House had a short response in all lowercase letters: ‘usss.’
The Secret Service communications office has remained tight-lipped and repeatedly has said the agency cannot provide comment on the ongoing investigation.
As of Monday morning, the investigation remains ‘open and active,’ according to USSS Communications Chief Anthony Guglielmi.
Trolls online immediately speculated that the source of cocaine is Biden’s addict son Hunter, 52. The White House has not commented on these suggestions and the president was not questioned about these rumors during his sit-down interview with CNN last week.
USSS released a statement early last week responding to the discovery: ‘On Sunday evening, the White House complex went into a precautionary closure as officers from the Secret Service Uniformed Division investigated an unknown item found inside a work area.’
‘The DC Fire Department was called to evaluate and quickly determined the item to be non-hazardous,’ the statement adds. ‘The item was sent for further evaluation and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending.’
The baggie in which the drug was found was sent out for fingerprint analysis last week.
Trump-era Border Commissioner and longtime FBI agent Mark Morgan told DailyMail.com that the case is cut-and-dry and should be solved already.
He questioned whether the White House really wanted to find who was responsible by suggesting Biden’s team might be putting up roadblocks as USSS investigates the matter.
‘An investigation like this is pretty straightforward. Everybody that enters the White House is manifested,’ he said, adding: ‘They know who comes in, they know when they came in, they’re checked, and there are video cameras everywhere.’
Initial DC Fire dispatch noted the white powder substance was found in the ‘library,’ but USSS clarified it was found in a ‘West Wing work area.’
Reports later revealed it was specifically left in the cubby of a storage facility where visitors keep their phones in lockboxes.
Morgan explained that permanent White House staff likely would not be using the cubbies, but that it could have been utilized by a senior-level official visiting the White House for a meeting.
