Agbogbomefia of the Asogli Traditional Area, Togbe Afede XIV, has disclosed a heartbreaking experience during a visit to the Jubilee House under the erstwhile President Akufo-Addo administration.
Togbe Afede XIV recalled that in 2020 together with other chiefs from the Volta Region, they were “embarrassed and denigrated” when they visited the then President at the Jubilee House to appeal for the withdrawal of soldiers deployed to the Volta Region ahead of the December 7 polls.
Delivering a powerful and thought-provoking speech during President Mahama’s ‘Thank You’ tour in the Volta Region on January 24 2025, Togbe Afede XIV revealed that the chiefs were criticised in the presence of the Volta Regional Minister and John Peter Amewu for no reason.
According to Togbe Afede XIV, the chiefs were accused of transporting people from Togo to vote on behalf of the NDC in the 2020 elections.
Recalling the moment, Togbe Afede XIV expressed his displeasure with how they were treated at the Jubilee House.
“I recall that in 2020 when Volta felt under siege from soldiers that have been sent from Accra in the run-up to the elections, we came together a good number of us from the Volta House of Chiefs visited the then President Akufo-Addo to appeal for mercy on our people.
“Sadly, our Minister was there together with one of our own sons, Mr. Amewu was there, they denigrated us and embarrassed us the chiefs and we left extremely sad.
“For instance, it was said that I, Togbe was going round to interfere registration which was not true. It was said that we the chiefs were all NDC and we typically import voters from Togo and hoard them for weeks so that they vote for the NDC, those were the comment said right in our presence. It wasn’t palatable at all,” he revealed.
Togbe Afede XIV further took the opportunity to commend President Mahama for appointing a James Gunu as Volta Regional Minister, contrasting the new appointee with his predecessor, Dr. Archibald Letsa, who served under the Akufo-Addo administration.
“We know your Regional Minister will not be like the one we just had,” he stated.
