Illegal mining has been on the rise in Ghana in recently and a surprising and disheartening effect has already manifested. Attention of the public was drawn when water bodies were seen so brownish indicating tremendous pollution rendering these water bodies unfit for domestic use. Lands and vegetations were also destroyed as illegal miners dug almost everywhere in the forest and other gold saturated regions. This has left the natural ecosystem of these communities tempered with hence affecting both aquatic and terrestrial life.
Citizens upon realizing the devastating state of water bodies, lands and vegetations took to the street to demonstrate to send a notice to the government to act immediately. Measures have already been put to place and some progress has been seen. Military personnel who have been assigned to major hotspot of these illegal miners have been seen burning and destroying illegal mining equipment and also some arrests have been made. The government and the whole country is looking forward to the restoration of these water bodies and the natural ecosystem.
In a post intercepted on the official twitter page of Joy News TV is an interview session with a research scientist stationed at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – Soil Research Institute (SRI). Questions on Galamsey was asked and he had a lot to offer. In his statements, he told the host about a research conducted by the council on how many years it will take to restore the condition of the lands to their natural state. The research showed that, it may take more than 300 years to restore the integrity of the lands. The water bodies also may take up to a maximum of 15 years to restore their pure and natural state.
