In the wake of this galamsey brouhaha, there has been calls for voices of the nation to speak up for the right thing to be done. Notable amongst these voices are journalists. Journalists have the platform that can convey the worries and concerns of the grassroots to the government. And it is said, those he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. Engaging in the act that must be condemned tends to silence one’s voice.
The Fourth Estate has released a list of big people who are “kingpins” in the galamsey business, destroying the forest reserves. As usual, top politicians were listed but surprisingly, a renowned radio presenter, who is also a lawyer, was alleged to be engaged in the mass destruction.
Investigations by The Fourth Estate reveal that Mr. Pyne, a former Ashanti regional secretary of the NPP and the current mayor of Kumasi, co-owns a company called Sam and Gyan Limited. He shares ownership with Ohene Amankwah Gyan, a Kumasi-based radio presenter who also works as a lawyer for the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation. Sam and Gyan Mining Limited has a permit to mine in the Oda Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region until 2053.
