Highly esteemed Ghanaian preacher, Pastor Mensa Otabil has voiced his concerns about the increasing commoditization of the prophetic office by some selected men of God in Ghana.
Speaking on the state of religious leadership to his congregation, the respected man of God lamented that the title of “Prophet” has been cheapened leading to a public mistrust in the office.
Pastor Mensa Otabil warned that the sacred title, once held in high regard is now being used by individuals without accountability and now a hear of the title prophet is almost associated with conman.
“We have so commoditize the noble title of the prophets that now if you call yourself a prophet, it’s almost like being called a conman” he said, pointing out the outcome of unregulated prophecies in the current religious landscape in Ghana.
Otabil reflected on his childhood when bishops were held in high esteem. He said those days there were only two bishops, those that are in the Catholic Church and those at the Anglican church. He said those bishops were believed to be noble people in society. He said the unregulated prophecies has led to public mistrust in the new generation men of God largely due to commercialization of prophecies.
“I see so much danger, so much self dessipation and self destruction. The public is losing confidence in us. How can we take such a sacred title used by Elijah, Daniel, so literally. Because there is no regulatory body so everyone picks the title and use it” he lamented.
