Sarah Adwoa Safo Explains Absence from Campaign Activities in Dome-Kwabenya

17 Dec

According to JoyNewsTv,Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, has explained her decision not to engage in campaign activities for the December 7 election. The former Minister for Gender, Women, and Social Protection stated that her choice was to give the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mike Ocquaye Junior, the space to operate.

Speaking in an interview after Parliament resumed on December 16, 2024, Adwoa Safo recalled that after losing the NPP primaries on January 27, she had made it clear she would focus on supporting the NPP flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the national campaign.

“I think my influence is still there. I want to give my opponent the room to work as he wishes, not the way I want the constituency to follow,” she said.

Mike Ocquaye Junior, who had hoped to succeed Safo in the ninth Parliament, was defeated in the December 7 election. The NPP lost the Dome-Kwabenya seat, historically considered its stronghold, to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the NDC won with 51,634 votes, while Ocquaye secured 50,477 votes.

Despite the defeat, Ocquaye has expressed his refusal to accept the election results, claiming the declaration was invalid amidst reports of chaos during the collation process.
