Russia is alleging the United States is conducting biological research in Ghana, Djibouti, Kenya, and Nigeria that could be used for biowarfare.
Specifically, they claim the US is studying disease outbreaks, isolating pathogens, and monitoring infectious diseases.
The allegations were made public through a Facebook post by DW Africa on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
Additionally, the US has reportedly established a military medical centre in Kenya to monitor the spread of infectious diseases in Central Africa. In Nigeria, a joint medical research centre and military medical laboratory were set up in 2024, staffed by ten specialists from the US Department of Defence.
Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Alexey Shevtsov, has further alleged that the US is developing biological weapons, including those targeting specific ethnic groups.
The accusations come amidst already strained relations between the United States and Russia, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Despite shared interests in areas such as nuclear safety, counterterrorism, and combating global health challenges, the relationship between the two nations has become increasingly adversarial in recent years.
The United States has not yet responded to the latest allegations, which have added to the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the two powers.
However, US has consistently denied these accusations, calling them unsubstantiated. The US maintains that its research in Africa is solely for public health purposes.
