The Founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has disclosed how instrumental he was in the arrest of a notorious armed robber who was once Accra’s most wanted criminal.

Speaking to his congregation, the controversial prophet, though failing to provide details of the strategy employed, claimed he was the mastermind behind the arrest of the armed robber.

He stated that he directed the then Greater Accra Regional Police Commander on how to effect the arrest. “…COP (Rtd) Kofi Boakye was my friend at the time he was the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander.

“…COP (Rtd) Kofi Boakye was my friend at the time he was the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander. There was once a dreaded armed robber who was the most wanted criminal on the police wanted list. I am the one who taught them [the police] what to do to arrest this wanted armed robber. It is not all things that I can speak about publicly. It is not that Iʼm putting this out there in the public domain as an act of self-aggrandizement.

These are incontrovertible facts. Thereʼs a police officer [Nii] who will bear me witness on this issue I have spoken about,” Rev. Owusu Bempah said. Though the prophet did not identify the said armed robber, it is believed he was referring to the now-jailed armed robber, Ataa Ayi. Ataa Ayi became a household name in the late 1990s and early 2000s when there were several news reports about the robberies undertaken by his gang, mainly in the Greater Accra region.

He and his gang robbed their victims of huge sums of money, including foreign currencies. Rumors circulated that he possessed charms capable of protecting him from gunfire and that he could also disappear when being chased by the police. Ataa Ayi possessed great prowess behind the steering wheel and was renowned for his exceptional driving skills, as documented by the police. According to police reports, he was capable of reversing a car at speeds of up to 100 km per hour during police chases.

Ataa Ayi was arrested on February 28, 2005, at Teshie-Nungua in Accra after police laid an ambush for him. Then 32 years old, he was sentenced to 160 years with hard labor and is still serving his time at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prisons in Cape Coast. Ataa Ayi is now a man of God in prison. He regrets all his past crimes and sins and has accepted Jesus as his Savior.
