The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has indicated that, from February 2024, salaries of public sector workers without Ghana card will be frozen.
The initiative, according to the Controller and Accountant General, is to help reduce the ghost names on the government payroll.
The Controller, after issuing out a directive for the National Identification Authority (NIA) to organise a special registration exercise for public sector workers who do not have the document, said it is a crucial decision which could affect the livelihoods of many.
The discussion came up at a meeting between the CAGD and the NIA on October 11, 2023, where timelines for the proposed registration exercise were discussed.
However, it appears that there was a miscommunication, as CAGD later wrote to NIA seeking consent and agreement on the proposed timelines.
In response, the NIA stated that they had previously communicated their inability to conduct a special registration exercise.
Instead, they had opened offices nationwide for general registration on September 4, including a focus on targeted public sector employees on the government payroll.
The CAGD, has on this note, issued a critical advisory to its staff and members to utilise any of the 292 NIA offices nationwide to register for the card.
The Controller, emphasising priority for government employees, has taken a firm stance on the compliance.
