Roy Hodgson has been confirmed as the new Crystal Palace manager for the upcoming Premier League season after the club announced he would be staying at the helm.

The 75-year-old guided Palace to English top-flight safety after being brought in to replace Patrick Vieira midway through last season and will stay in his position as head coach for the new campaign.

Confirming the news on social media, Palace tweeted: ‘We’re pleased to announce that Roy Hodgson has been appointed Crystal Palace manager for the 23/24 season.

Hodgson’s return to Selhurst Park was originally envisaged as a temporary solution to the club’s relegation struggles that saw them dragged into a drop-zone scrap.

The former England boss quickly eradicated fears of relegation, winning his first three matches in charge against fellow strugglers Leicester, Leeds, and Southampton. All three of those would eventually be relegated to the Championship.

Meanwhile, Palace pushed on and took further top-flight scalps in Wolverhampton and West Ham as Hodgson brought a new brand of attacking football with him.

His continuation means he will maintain his status as the oldest coach in the Premier League and marks a complete U-turn after he previously left the club two years ago to spend more time with his family.

Supporters previously bemoaned the Englishman’s tactics during his first tenure at the club, but now appear in full agreement that the right decision has been made by extending his stay.

One commenter reacting to the news said: ‘Let’s hope he can carry on the attractive football we ended the season with. I don’t mind this at all Roy is a legend!’
