Eugene Boakye Antwi, a former Member of Parliament for the Subin constituency, has alleged that some executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the constituency and regional levels were involved in selling Senior High School (SHS) placement slots for as much as GH¢5,000 as reported by Ghana Web on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
He claims this unethical practice contributed to the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa FM on January 20, 2025, Antwi revealed that these allegations were raised on a platform for NPP MPs but were not effectively addressed. He noted that the then Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, had asked for concrete evidence before any action could be taken.
“This issue came up, and people reported it on the MPs’ platform, but the minister said he needed evidence,” he explained.
The former lawmaker further alleged that such incidents were widespread, citing the dismissal of a former treasurer in the Assin Central constituency for collecting over GH¢500,000 in exchange for placement slots.
Antwi expressed concern about the negative impact of these activities on the party’s reputation, stating, “Why should I vote for you to come to power, and if my child needs placement, I have to pay GH¢5,000?”
He also stated that he had taken steps to address similar issues in his constituency before his tenure as an MP.
The allegations have sparked discussions about accountability within the party, with many calling for thorough investigations to ensure transparency and fairness in educational placements.
