The National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC), the coalition of all opposition political parties in Guinea has unanimously refused to honour any invitation to dialogue by the UN-AU-ECOWAS mediation team deployed into the country.
According to the FNDC, the combined mediation team has an overly simplistic approach to a rather deep crisis caused by Alpha Condé. Suo moto, any dialogue with them will be a total waste of time.
So for the meantime, the agenda remains ‘Alpha Must Go’ and achieving that can only be nationwide protests everyday with warning for traders, companies both local and foreign to remain closed and grind operations.
At least 21 people are now thought to have died in the unrest that has followed Guinea’s disputed election earlier this month.
Clashes between opposition supporters and security forces continued over the weekend, when the electoral commission confirmed President Alpha Condé’s controversial third term in office.
The opposition, which has declared itself the victor, says Mr Conde broke the law when he changed the constitution in March to allow him to run again.
The United Nations and the African Union have sent mediators to Guinea to try to negotiate a solution.
