A new national poll conducted by Global Analytics has provided a snapshot of Ghana’s political landscape ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election.
The poll reveals that Mr. John Dramani Mahama, former President of Ghana, is leading with 53.3% of voters likely to choose him as their preferred candidate.
His main competitor, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, is trailing behind, securing 31.6% of voter support according to the poll.
In a post on X, this latest survey is part of a series of polls that Global Analytics has been conducting in anticipation of the 2024 elections.
Their first national poll for the elections was launched in January 2022, giving a glimpse into the early dynamics of the race between Mahama and Bawumia.
Back then, the poll showed a hypothetical race between the two where Mahama was ahead with 48% of voter support, compared to Bawumia’s 42%.
However, the political landscape shifted significantly following the introduction of the controversial E-levy in April 2022, a government initiative that imposed a levy on electronic transactions.
The implementation of this policy seemed to have had a tangible impact on voter sentiment, as Global Analytics’ polling revealed that Mahama’s support grew from 48% to 53% in the months following the levy’s introduction, while Bawumia’s support declined from 42% to 38%.
The polling used a 3-month moving average between January and April 2022, showing a clear link between the government’s financial policy and voter preferences.
Fast forward to today, and the numbers remain steady for Mahama.
The most recent national telephone poll by Global Analytics indicates that Mahama continues to hold 53% of the projected vote share, the same percentage he garnered in April 2022.
In contrast, Bawumia’s voter support has dipped further to 31.6%, a six-point drop from his April 2022 standing.
According to the poll, a significant factor contributing to Bawumia’s decline is the split of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) votes between two other candidates, AKK and NKB.
Additionally, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of undecided voters compared to earlier polls in 2022.
This shift in voter allegiance and uncertainty among the electorate has further weakened Bawumia’s chances of catching up with Mahama.
