An NDC Constituency Secretary has been apprehended with 23,000 ballot papers in the Volta Region.
According to Ghana Web on Friday, December 6, 2024, The incident occurred on Thursday, December 5, when immigration officers conducting a routine patrol in the Akatsi North District made the unexpected discovery at approximately 12:45 p.m.
The suspect, identified as Abraham Ahiabu, was caught transporting three booklets of ballots, each containing 1,000 papers, totaling 3,000 ballots.
The interception took place at Hevi, an unapproved route in the area, while officers were monitoring the Ave Havi enclave on the way to Vodome, a border town adjacent to Togo.
Ahiabu, the Constituency Secretary for Akatsi North, claimed he was delivering the ballots to Vodome to educate voters on the election process.
However, the discovery of an additional 20,000 ballots in his possession has sparked serious questions about the real motive behind the operation.
The use of an unauthorized route, commonly associated with cross-border activities, has raised concerns about the potential for electoral fraud.
The authenticity of the ballot papers is now under scrutiny, with authorities transferring the seized materials to the local Electoral Commission for verification.
The nature of Ahiabu’s transport and the proximity to Ghana’s upcoming elections have led to speculation about a possible attempt to influence the electoral process by involving foreign voters.
Ahiabu has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation. The case has prompted a wider review of election security and integrity as the country prepares for its elections.
