Deputy Campaign Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has revealed that the party realised they had lost the 2024 general elections just hours after the polls closed on December 7.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program on December 11, Nana Akomea explained that the NPP’s internal collation system, led by Joe Anokye, made it possible for them to monitor results from polling stations in real time.
According to a report by Ghanaweb, He noted that the system provided updates every twenty minutes, allowing the party to track the election outcome as it unfolded.
According to him, by 11:30 PM on election night, the party was already aware of their loss. “I would like to commend our collation officials led by Joe Anokye. They did fantastic work. By 11 PM – 11:30 PM, we knew we had lost. The system they set up provided us with updates every twenty minutes,” he said.
Nana Akomea shared that the NPP was initially leading during the collation process. Results from the first 2,500 polling stations put them ahead.
However, as results from more polling stations came in, their lead vanished. By the time they received updates from 8,000 polling stations, it was clear they were trailing, and the trend did not reverse.
“We started off leading. By the time we had results from around two thousand five hundred polling stations, we were ahead. However, by the time we reached about eight thousand polling stations, the tide had turned against us, and it never shifted back in our favor. By 11:30, we knew we had lost,” he explained.
This early confirmation of defeat informed the decision of the NPP’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to deliver a concession speech ahead of the Electoral Commission’s official announcement.
In the election, former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won with 56.55% of the total valid votes. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia came second with 41.61%, while 12 other candidates shared the remaining votes.
