investigations have begun after a saloon car ran over bystanders, killing two people in the Kumasi suburb of Sokoban Krofrom Thursday night.
Reports say the speeding vehicle while attempting to evade arrest, veered off the road and tragically hit two residents.
The assemblyman of the area, Bismark Addai Dwomoh, who confirmed the incident to Asaase News said an angry mob set the car ablaze in an attempt to lynch the driver. He was, however, saved by police officers deployed to the scene.
“The car was being chased by customs officers from Daaban. But we don’t know why they were after the vehicle. Because the car was speeding it hit the two victims: a man and a woman, killing the woman on the spot. Later we received information that the man had also died while receiving treatment at the hospital,” Dwomoh said.
“The vehicle has been burnt. The mob was infuriated by the fact that a towing car had come to convey the vehicle while the dead woman was ignored. I had to arrange for the police to come and pick the body away. It was after I had left the scene when I got a call that the irate youth had set the vehicle ablaze,” he added.
The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and preservation. Asaase News gathers that the driver has since been released on bail, pending legal proceedings.
