Martin Amidu Accuses Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin of Corruption, Power Struggles and Bloated Ego

According to a news report by Ghanaweb, in a scathing critique of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has leveled serious allegations against the senior politician, accusing him of having a “bloated ego” that has caused significant dysfunction within Ghana’s political system.

Amidu’s explosive claims were made in an article titled “The Case of Alban Bagbin for Helplessness and the Blackmail of a Fearful and Cowardly NDC Leadership.” The article, published on Tuesday, sees Amidu—who resigned as Special Prosecutor in November 2020, citing government interference—delivering a damning assessment of Bagbin’s leadership as Speaker of Parliament.

Amidu asserts that Bagbin’s ego and personal ambitions have compromised his ability to perform his duties effectively, resulting in a weakened legislative process. He alleges that the Speaker’s thirst for power has led to a breakdown in parliamentary functionality, with decisions becoming increasingly clouded by his personal and political interests.

The former Special Prosecutor did not stop at criticizing Bagbin’s leadership style. Amidu accused the Speaker of being complicit in corruption and abuse of power within the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He claimed that Bagbin has turned a blind eye to alleged corrupt practices within the party to protect his political allies, undermining the very principles of accountability and transparency that he was supposed to uphold.

Amidu’s accusations are particularly pointed given his previous role as Special Prosecutor, where he made his name by pursuing anti-corruption efforts. In his article, he pointed to Bagbin’s refusal to challenge corrupt members of the NDC, suggesting that Bagbin’s political survival was being prioritized over the country’s need for justice and reform.

“Bagbin has proven to be an enabler of corruption within his own party, covering up for those who should be held accountable,” Amidu wrote. “His desire for power is stronger than his commitment to democratic principles.
