Mahama’s Peaceful Visit Turned Chaotic in Ashanti as NDC Leaders Call for Investigation

14 Nov

Former President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the Wangara chief in the Ashanti Region on Monday, November 11, took an unexpected turn when tensions erupted between NDC supporters and Asawase Member of Parliament, Muntaka Mubarak as reported by Asaaseradio on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

Mahama was in the region to pay his respects to the Wangara chief and engage with the Zongo communities, but his visit soon became the backdrop for a confrontation that led to a chaotic scene.

Supporters of the NDC reportedly blocked MP Muntaka Mubarak, a key member of Mahama’s delegation, from entering the palace, leading to a heated exchange.

The altercation, which nearly escalated into a physical confrontation, was swiftly contained by senior party figures, including retired Ashanti Regional Police Commander Kofi Boakye, who intervened to calm the situation.

The incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, has sparked outrage within the opposition National Democratic Congress.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Nasir Gardenboi, the communications director for the NDC in the Asawase Constituency, condemned the disruption as “disgraceful behaviour” that undermines party unity and democratic values.

“The NDC Asawase Constituency unequivocally condemns this disgraceful behaviour as it undermines not only party cohesion but also societal norms of respect and civility,” Gardenboi stated. He further emphasized that those responsible for the incident would face consequences.

“We assert that these acts will not go unpunished; both Sarki Don Jazzi and Aboabo Rasta are warned that their presence at any NDC event in Asawase will be met with fierce resistance,” he added.

The NDC has also called for an immediate investigation by the Ghana Police Service to ensure that those behind the disturbance are held accountable.

The party’s leadership has been firm in their stance, stressing that the breach of party unity would not be tolerated. The situation highlights growing tensions within the NDC as Mahama continues his engagements ahead of the upcoming elections.
