The politician Kennedy Agyapong has been ordered by a US court to pay an amount of 18 million dollars to Anas Aremeyaw Anas for defamation. Following the order, many are eager to know what led to the defamation suit.
The case stems from a live interview Kennedy Agyapong granted on “The Daddy Fred Show” on September 7, 2021. The online program, hosted by US-based Ghanaian Frederick Asamoah, saw Agyapong making serious allegations against Anas, branding him as a criminal and a thief.
Agyapong did not stop there. He accused Anas of being behind the **murder of Ahmed Suale**, a fellow investigative journalist who was assassinated in 2019. Suale was a close associate of Anas and had worked with him on high-profile investigative projects, including the famous “Number 12” documentary that exposed corruption in Ghana’s football scene.
Kennedy Agyapong had previously released Suale’s identity and encouraged people to attack him, an act many believe contributed to his tragic murder. His fresh allegations in the 2021 interview fueled suspicions that he was actively targeting Anas and his team.
Additionally, Agyapong claimed that Anas was responsible for the deaths of multiple Chinese nationals in Ghana, suggesting that he extorted money from them under the guise of investigative journalism.
Following these accusations, Anas felt his reputation and personal safety were at risk. He initially filed a defamation case in Ghana, but the Supreme Court dismissed it. Determined to clear his name, he took legal action in the United States, where the defamatory statements were made.
After reviewing the case, the Essex County Superior Court ruled in favor of Anas, concluding that Agyapong’s statements were false and damaging. This led to the court ordering Agyapong to pay 18 million dollars in damages.
