Two popular Broadcast Journalists, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah and Kwame Appiah Kubi who were at Asankragua in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region on official duties arrested three Chinese nationals involved in galamsey activities along one of Ghana’s biggest rivers, River Tano.
Okatakyie expressed concern over the extent of the damage caused by their illegal mining activities to the quality of River Tano and added that, despite being the rainy season, the river has not shown the increase in volume it used to due to galamsey activities
In the video, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah and Kwame Appiah Kubi were seen confronting the Chinese and the other Ghanaians on the minining site asking them if they have been given permits to mine.
“Per the law, we can arrest you”, Okatakyi was heard telling the Chinese nationals. however, he struggled with the media personality saying he will not go. “You think we will sit down for you guys to destroy our lands anyhow you can? Can we go to China and fool like this?”, Okatakyie asked angrily.
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah and Kwame Appiah Kubi further took the Chinese nationals to the Tano River to see the deteriorating state of the river and later handed them to the police.
He confirmed this during a press briefing by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia raising concerns over the increase in illegal mining activities in the country involving foreigners with their Ghanaian collaborators.
