Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has shared his perspective on why the party lost the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Kessben TV, Mr. Boadu explained that the NPP failed to meet the expectations of ordinary Ghanaians. He noted that the party focused heavily on rewarding delegates with gifts and money during internal elections but overlooked the general electorate, leading to widespread voter dissatisfaction and apathy.
He highlighted that during the party’s internal elections, delegates received expensive items like refrigerators, televisions, and substantial sums of money. However, when it came to the general elections, ordinary voters felt neglected. This imbalance, he argued, angered many Ghanaians and discouraged them from voting for the NPP or participating in the elections altogether.
Explaining further, he said, “You give a fridge, TV, and GHC5000 to someone I live with because they are a delegate, but during the general elections, you expect me to go out and vote? If I were to react, you wouldn’t dare come near me again.”
His remarks reflect the frustrations of many voters who felt abandoned by the party after supporting it in previous elections. Boadu believes this sense of neglect played a significant role in the NPP’s defeat.
John Boadu’s comments contribute to the broader conversation about the party’s performance in the 2024 elections and underscore the need for the NPP to reflect on its mistakes if it hopes to regain the trust of the electorate in future elections.
