After 8 years of standing trial, Daniel Asiedu has been found not guilty after a 7-member jury returned a 4-3 not guilty verdict on the charges of robbery and murder.
The accused person was charged for killing former member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu on February 9, 2016.
The prosecution led by Principal State Attorney Sefakor Batsa relied on the witness testimonies of 8 persons.
The witnesses included Samuel Berko Sarkodie, the driver of the late MP, the MP’s Security man, Apraku, neighbour of the accused Kennedy Kuranchie, George Amofa, brother of Kuranchie (3rd prosecution witness), and Abigail Marfo a lady in whose house Daniel Asiedu reportedly went to bath after the heinous crime.
In her closing statement, Principal State Attorney Sefakor Batsa urged the jury to find Daniel Asiedu guilty since all the evidences presented to the court as well as his submissions point to the fact that he committed the crimes.
Daniel Asiedu among other things during using cross-examination had told the court “The Bible says that even Goliath was overpowered by David.”
All evidence of the prosecution shows that Daniel Asiedu aka Sexy Don Don stabbed JB Danquah several times, leading to his death.”
But lead counsel for the accused, Yaw Darkwa argued that his client was innocent. He noted that the prosecution hadn’t been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that his client committed the offenses.
After 5 hours of proceedings, the 7-member jury returned with a verdict of 4-3 on both charges.
Four of them found Daniel Asiedu not guilty of robbery while the remaining three found him guilty. The same decision was reached for the charge of murder.
Their decision makes it a hung jury. Presiding judge Lydia Osei Marfo discharged the jury and indicated of a retrial of the case.
