Five years after marriage, we had a son. I named him after my dad. My dad has only local names. No English name. My wife added an English name to his name. Lemuel, meaning belonging to God. According to her, it’s a promise she made to God. I told her I didn’t like the name but she insisted. While I called him with my dad’s name, my wife called him Lemuel. I told her to stop it since it wasn’t respectful to my dad.

When we named him in church, she found a way to sneak Lemuel in. My dad was confused. He came asking questions so I had to lie.

My son is currently in school and his classmates call him Lemuel. Meanwhile, I took him to school and registered his name without Lemuel. Again, my wife found a way to make it happen. His name in the register starts with Lemuel.

Currently, I’m at a place where I want to do something to enforce my dad’s name. Argument hasn’t helped. The church agreed with the Lemuel so they treated my complaint lightly. My dad’s name is lost. My child is four but if you call him with any other name he protests.

The last argument was heated. She fought back, saying she carried the child for nine months so she has the right to add a name to the child’s name. Good. I’ve decided not to pay school fees and any other fees concerning the child until the wrong is made right.
