Alexander Afenyo Markin, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Effutu Constituency has made an emphatic statement about the current power struggle in Parliament.
There is a stand-off in Parliament following Alban Bagbin’s ruling on the four Members of Parliament who have declared their intentions to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections as independent candidates.
The Speaker has declared the four seats vacant, kicking the affected legislators out of the House.
But in a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has overturned the Speaker’s ruling, instructing the Speaker to reinstate the affected legislators until it provides an interpretation to the provision which gives the Head of the Legislature the power to do so.
Despite the ruling, both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament are holding themselves as the Majority, forcing the Speaker to adjourn sitting indefinitely.
Speaker Bagbin expressed disappointment over the situation, highlighting that the absence of the NPP members rendered the session ineffective and forced the indefinite adjournment of Parliament.
Reacting to the development, Honourable Alexander Afenyo Markin has stated emphatically that he would never sit in the seat of the Minority Leader. The leader of the NPP Caucus in Parliament, in a post by Accra-based Joy News on its verified Facebook page, mentioned that it is not spiritually right for him to occupy the seat of the Minority Leader in Parliament.
“I will never sit in the Minority Leader’s seat; it isn’t good spiritually,” he said.
