A former Chief Justice of Ghana, Sophia Abena Boafoaa Akuffo, has said she is all for the revising of the Council of State instead of scrapping it.
She believes the Council will serve a good purpose when it is reformed, rather than scrapping it off as a section of the public has been calling for.
According to her, those proposing for it to be converted into a legislative chamber are making a reasonable call which she thinks would serve Ghana’s democracy well.
Her call comes on the back of the numerous backlash from a section of the public to the Council where many have suggested that it should be scrapped for outliving its usefulness.
Madam Akuffo, who was recently sworn into office as part of the Council of State, speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues Sunday, February 23, 2025, suggested that rather than scrapping the office off, it can serve as a legislative chamber to have a say on key decisions on the economy before they are effected.
“I’m all for reforming it. Revising it. I’m not too decided on that. Some are of the view that the Council of State should be converted into a legislative chamber so that matters like finance of the country, defence, those particularly key areas, they have a say in it before it is finally decided,” she indicated.
She also suggested that such a chamber, when it comes to being, should be backed by a legislation that would make it non-partisan to avoid the members becoming subservient to the executive.
“Of course, one would also have to come up with a formulation which would ensure that even though they are there, they’re still not there in a partisan capacity. Otherwise we might end up like some countries that we know. They can become rubber stamps of the Chief Executive,” she added.
