I am sorry – Afenyo-Markin apologises

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued an unreserved apology to the Clerk of Parliament, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, following his outburst during the ministerial vetting process.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Mr. Afenyo-Markin admitted that his comments about the Clerk may have caused distress to her and her family.

If the husband, the children, and family are traumatised by my comments about the Clerk, I am sorry,” he stated.

His apology follows criticism over his accusations that the Clerk acted in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Appointments Committee’s vetting of ministerial nominees on January 30. His remarks had sparked chaos in Parliament, leading to disruptions.

Acknowledging his mistake, Mr. Afenyo-Markin conceded that there was a better way to react. He also announced his intention to personally write to the Clerk to formally express his regret.

His apology was prompted by a plea from Kwame Governs Agbodza, NDC MP for Adaklu and Minister of Roads, urging him to reconcile with the Clerk to restore decorum in Parliament.
