According to Citinewsroom, Residents of Konongo, a small town in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, are reeling from shock and confusion following the discovery of the decomposed body of a missing teacher, Mr. Kwesi Amankwah, 45, at his rented home. Reported missing by his family nearly a month ago, the local community had grown increasingly concerned over his sudden disappearance.
The grim find was made by the landlord, Mr. Kwadwo Mensah, who responded to complaints from other tenants about a foul odor emanating from Mr. Amankwah’s room. “Kwesi was a reserved man who often kept to himself. It was unusual not to see him around, but I thought he’d just gone away for a few days,” Mr. Mensah recounted.
Upon breaking into the room, police were met with a harrowing scene: the body was found inside a large concrete coffin, covered with plywood and partially wrapped in black cloth. Beside the remains, investigators uncovered several jars containing unknown chemicals, which they believe may have been used to slow decomposition. This peculiar setup has raised suspicions of possible ritualistic practices or personal beliefs held by Mr. Amankwah.
The discovery has left the Konongo community both saddened and puzzled. Neighbors described Mr. Amankwah as a dedicated teacher who had a calm demeanor and did not seem troubled. “He was quiet, didn’t have many friends or visitors, and spent most of his time either at school or home,” noted Afia Serwaa, a local resident who last saw him in December.
Some residents recalled seeing him with unusual items and books, but they never felt compelled to question him directly. Colleague Mr. Kojo Nyarko described Mr. Amankwah as passionate about education, stating, “He was always reading and sometimes discussed unusual topics, but no one thought it was serious.”
Assistant Chief Inspector Abena Danquah, who is leading the investigation, indicated that the manner in which the body was placed in the concrete structure suggests significant time and effort went into its construction. “We are examining all aspects of this case, including any possible links to local beliefs or cult practices,” she said.
