Renowned Ghanaian political analyst Musa Dankwah has cited the close association between former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as major factors behind the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the recent elections. Dankwah revealed that around 80% of voters blame Nana Akufo-Addo for the party’s loss, viewing him as the primary reason for their failure.
He also emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s connection to Akufo-Addo played a significant role in the defeat. While Dr. Bawumia’s individual campaign performance wasn’t the issue, his association with the former president negatively impacted voter sentiment. Dankwah further pointed to the influence of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, particularly regarding the controversial e-levy, which was opposed by about 74% of Ghanaians.
Additionally, Dankwah criticized Dr. Bawumia’s campaign organization, describing it as poorly managed. “In the final months leading up to the election, Dr. Bawumia struggled to maintain a coherent strategy. While he was energetic in public, the behind-the-scenes campaign was chaotic,” he remarked. Dankwah’s analysis highlights the challenges the NPP faced and calls for the party to reconsider its strategy and leadership approach.
