The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed concerns over the increasing number of prank calls made to its emergency lines.
From December 2018 to January 2019, the Service received over 297,000 prank calls.
That figure has more than doubled in the year 2023.
Assistant Divisional Officer at the Public Relations Department of the Service, Alex King Nartey described the trend as worrying.
“This year we have had more than 600,000 prank calls,” he confirmed to JoyNews’ Blessed Sogah.
He also bemoaned some of the statements made by the callers. “If I tell you some of the silly things they say, you will be surprised. People call in and pleasure themselves on our call lines. That’s the truth. People call in and when they hear the female call representatives they misbehave …,” he said.
He cautioned callers to desist from such acts as it leads to delays in responding to distress calls.
