The selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as running mate to the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is not doing much of a magic for the party in the Ashanti region.

The governing NPP settled on the Manhyia South lawmaker as running mate to its flag bearer to consolidate the base of the party in the region which is its stronghold.

According to the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Musah Dankwah, although NAPO’s selection appears to be yielding fruits in terms of strengthening the base of the party, it is drifting floating voters away.

In its latest poll carried in the Ashanti region, whilst Dr. Bawumia made about 4% gains in the percentage of persons who are NPP supporters, his support from floating voters is going down.

Speaking with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight Tuesday, September 03, 2024, Musah Dankwah disclosed that about 12% to 15% of the voting population in the Ashanti region are floating, making their decline in support towards the NPP problematic.

“If you look at its impact on the NPP base in Ashanti region, I think he is doing well because in-between July, August and September, the poll we just did, it shows that those who are among NPP, Mahamudu Bawumia’s numbers went up nearly 4% compared to the August poll. He has increased in the NPP base.

“But then if you look at the floating voters, who appear to be a sizeable population of the Ashanti voters now –about 12% or 15%, –in the floating voters, that is where I think the effect is becoming [a problem] because it appears Bawumia’s support among the floating voters is shifting in Ashanti region and this can be attributed to the ticket,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Musah Dankwah has also said that it will take a miracle for the NPP to attain its 85% target in the Ashanti Region.

With the outcome of the latest survey, the Executive Director has disclosed that it will take John Mahama and Alan Kyerematen to be out of the race for the NPP to even achieve an 80% target.
