The Ghana Armed Forces warns the public to stop wearing military-style clothing and using military equipment.

According to a report by TIG Post on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, those found wearing military-style clothing or using military gear despite the warning will be apprehended, according to the GAF.

The GAF’s warning is aimed at curbing impersonation by non-military personnel, who have been using military uniforms to disguise themselves as soldiers while participating in illicit mining operations at galamsey sites.

The Ghana Armed Forces condemns the unauthorized use of military uniforms and gear by protesters, security personnel for public figures, and others, which undermines their efforts.

“GAF has also noted with dismay similar illegal acts among persons operating in illegal mining areas (galamsey sites) and some political activists.

“Despite ongoing education and warnings, this concerning trend appears to be increasing.”

Recent protests in Accra and Kumasi saw individuals, including protesters and self-proclaimed private security for dignitaries, donning military-pattern camouflage uniforms and gear, sparking concerns over unauthorized use of military attire.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is concerned about individuals impersonating soldiers during anti-galamsey operations and protests, which undermines their reputation and creates security risks.

These actions go against the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, a law still in effect that prohibits unauthorized use of military uniforms and equipment.

Essentially, this decree states that only authorized members of the Armed Forces, or those with special permission, are allowed to wear military attire.

The GAF warns that continued disregard for this law may lead to arrests, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing genuine military personnel from impostors to maintain national security.

The statement continued, “No person shall wear or use any military uniforms, equipment, accoutrements, or other material unless he or she is a member of the Armed Forces of Ghana”

The Ghana Armed Forces will crack down on unauthorized use of military uniforms and gear, arresting and prosecuting offenders, and urges the public to report suspicious cases to safeguard national security.

As Ghana prepares for its 2024 elections, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is counting on citizens’ cooperation to safeguard peace and security nationwide.

The military reaffirms its dedication to protecting the public and preserving Ghana’s territorial integrity, emphasizing the crucial role citizens play in maintaining stability during this critical period.
