According to Ghpage, Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has addressed the backlash he received following his public endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate. Speaking at a gathering at Ofori Panin Fie, Kufuor subtly responded to the criticisms, which included remarks from former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, over his decision to back Bawumia’s presidential bid.
While Kufuor did not directly name Kyerematen, his remarks appeared to be a clear response to the ongoing feud and attacks from some quarters, including from figures within the NPP who have questioned his involvement in the party’s current leadership race.
“I’ve heard the criticisms, and I understand where some are coming from,” Kufuor said, his tone calm yet firm. “Some believe that because of my age and status as a former president, I should stay out of the political fray. But I believe that as someone who helped build the foundation of this party, I have every right to express my views on the direction the party and the country should take.”
The former president’s comments come amid growing tensions within the NPP as the race for the party’s presidential nomination heats up. Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia, the vice president of Ghana, has drawn ire from some party members, particularly those who support other candidates, including Kyerematen. Some critics have suggested that Kufuor, given his advanced age, should make way for younger leaders to lead the NPP.
Despite this criticism, Kufuor firmly stood by his endorsement, making it clear that his support for Bawumia was rooted in his belief in the vice president’s leadership potential rather than any personal agenda.
“It’s not about me. It’s about the future of this country,” Kufuor asserted. “Dr. Bawumia is a capable man, and I’ve seen his potential from the very beginning.”
