Fire Service Finally Discloses Potential Cause Of Kantamanto Fire

03 Jan

In a report by myjoyonline, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has identified an electrical fault or arson as the likely cause of the catastrophic fire that engulfed Accra’s Kantamanto Market in the early hours of Thursday, January 2, 2025.

The blaze, which erupted around 1:19 a.m., devastated over 100 shops, causing extensive financial losses and leaving traders in despair.

Initial findings by the GNFS point to faulty electrical connections as a potential trigger, a recurrent issue in the market. However, the possibility of arson remains under investigation. Public Relations Officer Alex King Nartey explained, “We suspect electrical faults, but there are also indications that this could have been a deliberate act. An investigation is ongoing to establish the facts.”

The fire reduced goods worth millions of cedis to ashes, with many traders appealing for government intervention to help rebuild their businesses.

Firefighters encountered significant obstacles accessing the site, as obstructions hampered their ability to contain the flames promptly.

Mr. Nartey highlighted the urgent need to address fire safety concerns in markets nationwide, citing outdated infrastructure and insufficient resources as major challenges. “We need more logistical support and modern equipment to deal with emergencies effectively,” he stated.

As investigations continue, the incident underscores the critical need for proactive measures to prevent similar disasters and protect the livelihoods of market traders across the country.
