Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah has expressed concern over the public jubilation by some police officers following the appointment of a new Inspector-General of Police (IGP). According to COP Mensah, while he advocated for a change in the police hierarchy, he is not pleased with the open celebrations
The retired COP questioned the rationale behind the jubilation, highlighting that similar changes in the past did not elicit such reactions. “When Akufo-Addo took over, the then IGP was retired, but nobody jubilated. Why are the police jubilating now? That should tell you what they were going through during his period,” he stated in an interview with Joy News ¹.
COP Mensah’s concerns stem from the fact that the jubilation may indicate underlying issues with the previous leadership. He hopes that the new IGP, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, will bring positive reforms to the police service. “I am not happy with the jubilation, but I am happy with the change in leadership because now we are going to have a leader who will listen and do the right thing,” he added ¹.
The appointment of COP Yohuno as the new IGP was announced by President John Dramani Mahama on March 13, 2025, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare ¹. The development has sparked mixed reactions within the police service, with some officers expressing relief and optimism about the change in leadership.
As the police service embarks on a new chapter under COP Yohuno’s leadership, it remains to be seen how the changes will impact the service’s operations and relationships with the public. One thing is certain, however: the jubilation by some police officers has raised important questions about the state of the police service under the previous leadership.
