Former CIA director Leon Panetta has issued a stark warning about Donald Trump, stating that he poses a significant threat to global security if re-elected in November. Speaking on stage before Kamala Harris accepted her party’s nomination, Panetta told Democrats “he tells tyrants, like Putin, they can do whatever the hell they want,”.
During his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, Panetta gave a damning assessment of the Republican presidential nominee. Panetta, who served as CIA chief for two years under Barack Obama and directed the 2011 special op mission to take out Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, addressed thousands at the United Center in Chicago.
He warned that if Trump returns to the Oval Office, he “would abandon our allies and isolate America. Trump tells tyrants, like Putin, they can do whatever the hell they want. Kamala Harris tells tyrants: ‘To hell you can! Not on my watch.'”
The 86-year-old, who served as defense secretary from 2011 to 2013 during his last role in the White House, went on to recall his experiences eliminating Bin Laden.
Addressing the crowd, he said: “I’m proud to have served in the army, congress, the White House, chief of staff, CIA director, secretary of defense.”
“I’ve looked into the eyes of our warriors and deployed them into battle. I gave the order directing our special operations forces to fly two helicopters 150 miles into Abbottabad at night and, by the time the sun rose, Osama Bin Laden was dead.”
“Because nobody attacks our country and gets away with it.”
Panetta’s speech came before Vice President Kamala Harris officially accepted the party nomination. He remarked: “That’s what our warriors do. Our warriors need a tough, cool headed commander in chief to defend our democracy from tyrants and terrorists, we need Kamala Harris behind the resolute desk.
“She knows a tyrant when she sees one and our allies know a leader when they see one.”
On her robust political stint, including her prominent role on the Senate Intelligence Committee and as Vice President, interacting with over 150 global heads.
Describing Harris’ diplomatic stance, he said, “She has looked our allies in the eye and said ‘America has your back.'”.
Asserting a cautionary view on Trumps foreign policy, he declared, “Trump would abandon our allies and isolate America. We tried that in the 1930s – it was foolish and dangerous then and it is foolish and dangerous now.”
