Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region, is at the center of a controversy after a video surfaced showing some of his constituents pouring libations and swearing to the gods that they will vote for him in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections.
According to reports, Afenyo-Markin allegedly gave each of the constituents 1,000 cedis and took them to a river deity at night, where they were asked to pour libations and swear an oath to vote for him.
This video has gone viral on social media, sparking heated discussions and concerns about the ethics of such practices in politics.
Afenyo-Markin, who recently replaced Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as the Majority Leader in Parliament, has been a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics.
His appointment was seen as a significant change in leadership, with many expecting him to bring a new dynamic to the role. However, this recent controversy threatens to tarnish his reputation and raise questions about his campaign tactics.
While some may view the act of pouring libations and swearing oaths as a cultural tradition, others see it as a form of coercion or manipulation.
