The Vice President and flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned Members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament for rushing to become majority.

He says the NPP MPs are aware of the defeat ahead of them in the upcoming elections, the reason they are rushing to taste majority before cementing their opposition position for the next four years.

Addressing some party faithful at Ho Central in the Volta region Tuesday, October 22, 2024, he said the NPP members are panicking due to the defeat that looms ahead of them in the upcoming polls.

He questioned why they want to become majority with just six weeks to elections.

“They are panicking. The NDC know that they are losing this elections. They know that we are winning this election so they are panicking. Just think about it, we have six weeks to an election and their only concern is that they want to be a majority for six weeks when you have been a minority for 8 years. What is the rush? Because they know they have lost the election and so they want to taste a majority position for six weeks,” he stated.

The Vice President said the NPP is going to stay focused and not be distracted by the recent happenings in Parliament since it is certain of victory in the polls ahead.

“But for us, we know that we are going to stay focused. We will not be distracted. We are the majority party and we will be the majority party on December 7th,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia’s comments follow the majority-minority conundrum in the House where both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) are claiming majority status.

The confusion comes as a result of a ruling by the Speaker of Parliament Thursday, October 17, 2024, where some four seats were declared vacant. The declaration, subsequently reduced the membership of the governing NPP, who were then Majority to 135, with the opposition NDC, who were the Minority, remaining with 136 members to assume the Majority position.

Leader of the NPP caucus, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, filed an ex parte motion in the  Supreme Court, where it ruled to stay with the ruling of the Speaker.

This, has created a confusion since, with both caucuses claiming to be the majority side of the House.

The Speaker adjourned sitting indefinitely after the House couldn’t attain quorum.
