‘Do not drink alcohol’ if you are one of these 3 people, doctor warns

19 Sep

Too much alcohol isn’t recommended for anyone, but drinking will negatively affect certain people more than others.

A doctor has revealed three specific people who shouldn’t drink alcohol at all, because it could have detrimental effects.

3 people who should not drink alcohol

Speaking on TikTok, Welsh physician Dr Alex George said: “Do not drink alcohol if you are one of these three people.”

  1. People with ADHD

Firstly, he recommended that people with ADHD avoid alcohol completely because it’s like “pouring petrol on a fire”. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects people’s behaviour, making them restless, have trouble concentrating, and act on impulse, the NHS explains. Drinking alcohol heightens these common symptoms while “numbing the good things”.

  1. Those with depression

The doctor said those suffering from low mood or depression should stay away from alcohol too because it’s a depressant, so it will make your mental health worse in the long run. Alcohol physically affects the brain, “suppressing the good energy” and increasing feelings of depression, even in people who don’t usually struggle mentally.

  1. People not achieving goals

Finally, the third group who should avoid alcohol is people who are not achieving their goals or aspirations in life and are feeling “stuck”. Drinking can block you from being the person you want to be and realizing your true potential by inhibiting motivation and drive. Going sober or limiting alcohol intake can help you sleep better and increase focus.

“If I was one of these three people, I wouldn’t drink alcohol,” he concluded.

Benefits of not drinking alcohol

Even if you don’t fit into one of these three categories, abstaining from alcohol can have incredible benefits to your short-term and long-term health.

After drinking less, you will start to notice yourself feeling better in the mornings, being less tired and more energetic, having better skin and saving money, the NHS explains. In the long-term, it can lower your blood pressure, reduce your risk of stroke, hypertension, cancer and liver disease, lower cholesterol levels and improve your mood, memory and sleep.

Adults are recommended to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread across three days or more, which is around six medium glasses of wine or six pints of beer. Regularly drinking more than this can severely damage your health, and you have a higher risk of many cancers, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, brain damage and nervous system damage.

However, it’s important that even though drinking less than 14 units is considered “low risk,” there is no safe level of drinking.

Dr Alex George is a Welsh physician who studied Medicine at the University of Exeter. He went on to become a Junior Doctor in Emergency Medicine and is now the UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador within the Department for Education.
