The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in connection with the tragic death of Nana Pooley, an Asante Kotoko fan, during a recent match against Nsoatreman FC.
Pooley, whose real name was Francis Yaw Frimpong, was fatally stabbed during the second half of the game, which ended 1-0 in favor of Nsoatreman on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
The incident occurred at the Nana Konamansah Park in Nsoatreman, where tensions ran high throughout the match.
Reports suggest that Pooley had allegedly insulted Nsoatreman’s club owner, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, which sparked an angry confrontation.
To protect him, some Kotoko fans tried to escort Pooley out of the venue, but he was ambushed by a group of Nsoatreman supporters.
One of them then stabbed him in the ribs, leading to his tragic death.
In response to the incident, the Ghana Police moved quickly to investigate and arrest those involved.
Among those arrested were Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the owner of Nsoatreman FC, and two other suspects, Agyemang Duah Owusu and Kyeremeh Joseph.
Baffour Awuah, a former Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, is currently in police custody, along with the two other individuals, as investigations continue.
A special team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been dispatched to assist local authorities in their probe.
As part of their investigation, police conducted a search of one of the suspect’s homes, where they uncovered significant evidence.
They recovered a gun, an MP 23 pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition, and two dresses stained with what is believed to be blood.
This discovery has raised serious concerns and has prompted further scrutiny into the motives behind Pooley’s death.
The arrest of the suspects has been widely praised by the public, with many expressing gratitude for the police’s swift action.
However, some individuals have called for additional measures to address rising tensions between rival football fans.
