According to the report by Modern Ghana, Police in Assin Central have arrested a businessman, Kofi Mensah, for illegally transporting 56 loaded guns inside his Isuzu D-Max pickup truck.

The arrest happened at a police checkpoint on the evening of February 14, 2025.

According to Inspector Samuel Boateng, who led the operation, the police became suspicious when they noticed Kofi Mensah acting nervous.

“We asked him to step out of the vehicle, but he hesitated. That’s when we decided to search the car properly,” Inspector Boateng explained.

During the search, officers found several hidden compartments in the back of the pickup truck. Inside these compartments, they discovered 56 loaded guns, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action shotguns, and pistols.

“We were shocked by the number of weapons in the car. These are not just ordinary guns – they are dangerous weapons that could cause serious harm,” another officer said.

Kofi Mensah, who owns a small import business in Kumasi, claimed he had no idea the guns were in his vehicle.

“Officer, I swear, I don’t know anything about these guns! Someone must have put them in my car without my knowledge,” he pleaded.

However, the police did not believe his story. They immediately arrested him and took him to the Assin Central Police Station for further questioning.

Residents of Assin Central were alarmed when they heard about the incident. Many gathered at the police station, demanding answers.

“This is very scary. Where were these guns going? And who was supposed to receive them?” one concerned resident asked.

The police have since launched a full investigation. They are trying to find out where the guns came from and if Kofi Mensah was working with a larger group.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Police Commander, ACP George Adjei, assured the public that the police would do everything possible to bring those responsible to justice.

“We want to assure everyone that Ghana will not be a safe place for illegal arms dealers. We will investigate and make sure those behind this are arrested,” he said.

As of now, Kofi Mensah remains in police custody, and he is expected to appear in court soon. The police have also urged anyone with information about illegal weapons to come forward and report it.
