28 Feb

The boyfriend of Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biological Sciences student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been arrested in connection with her death.

The suspect is currently being held at the Research Hills Police Station, assisting with investigations.

Joana’s lifeless body was discovered near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre around 5:00 a.m. on February 27, 2025.

Preliminary reports suggest that the suspect, who is also a KNUST student and an alumnus of Prempeh College, was involved in a violent altercation with Joana before her death.

CCTV footage allegedly captured the confrontation, during which Joana fell to the ground. After realizing she was unresponsive, the suspect reportedly moved her body to the location where it was later found.

Eyewitness accounts and video evidence indicate that the suspect attended a mid-semester examination the same morning, wearing the same clothes seen in the CCTV footage.

Following the discovery of Joana’s body, authorities swiftly initiated an investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest.

KNUST authorities, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), internal security, and the University Health Services, have launched a comprehensive inquiry.

The university released a statement expressing deep concern over the incident and pledged to uncover the truth.

They have also informed Joana’s family and urged students to remain calm while avoiding the spread of unverified information.

The tragic death of Joana Deladem Yabani has sparked widespread discussion on social media. Prominent social commentator Albert Nat Hyde, known as “Bongo Ideas,” expressed concerns about the rising number of student deaths at KNUST.

He claimed that between 2021 and 2024, the university recorded multiple fatalities, with many victims being final-year students, particularly females. According to him, the most common cause of death among KNUST students has been road accidents.

This incident follows the recent death of Afia Dedaa Osae-Atuah, a third-year Geography student who was struck by a vehicle while attempting to repair her laptop.

These recurring tragedies have fueled calls for improved safety measures and spiritual intervention within the university community.
