According to the report by GhanaWeb, police in the Ashanti Region have arrested a suspect who masterminded the kidnapping of a prominent businessman.
The suspect, identified as Kofi Mensah, allegedly lured the victim using a lady to gain his trust before executing the abduction.
The incident occurred last week in Kumasi, where the businessman, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, was kidnapped and held for ransom.
According to police reports, the suspect and his accomplices demanded GHC 310,000 from the businessman’s family in exchange for his release.
Superintendent Samuel Obeng, speaking to reporters, explained how the operation unfolded.
“The suspect used a lady to lure the businessman into a trap. They held him hostage in a secluded location and pressured the family to pay a ransom. After days of surveillance, we managed to apprehend Kofi Mensah shortly after he received the ransom money,” he said.
The victim’s family, desperate to save their loved one, complied with the demands and transferred the money.
However, police acted swiftly and tracked the suspect to his hideout, where he was arrested with the ransom still in his possession.
“I’m grateful to the police for their quick response,” said the victim after being rescued unharmed.
“It was a terrifying experience, but I’m happy to be alive and back with my family.”
The lady used in the scheme is also in custody, and authorities are working to identify other accomplices involved in the crime.
Eyewitnesses at the scene of the arrest described a tense moment when police moved in.
“The man was caught red-handed with the money,” said Kwame Asiedu, a resident. “It’s shocking how far people will go for money these days.”
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has warned the public to be cautious of strangers and avoid sharing sensitive personal information.
“This case is a clear example of how criminals exploit relationships to carry out their plans. We urge everyone to be vigilant,” Superintendent Obeng advised.
The suspect is expected to appear in court next week to face charges of kidnapping, extortion, and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Meanwhile, police have assured the public of their commitment to tackling crime and ensuring safety in the region.
