A security expert is urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo-Dampare, to arrest Mr. Sammi Awuku, the Campaign Advisor to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and Vice President.
According to Mr. Anthony Acquaye, the IGP must swiftly summon Mr. Awuku, who also serves as the Director-General of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA).
Mr. Awuku recently made a statement on Accra-based Peace FM, admitting that he knows the locations of armed robbers in the country.
He further revealed that, as a National Youth Organizer and later National Organizer, he campaigned for his party in these areas.
Mr. Awuku argued that it would be naïve to only campaign to bishops since both bishops and the armed robbers have one vote each in an election.
In response to this revelation, Mr. Acquaye, speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s evening news on Thursday, May 16, 2024, asserted that Mr. Awuku’s admission amounts to condoning criminality.
He emphasized that armed robbers are hardened criminals who should not be engaged with.
Mr. Acquaye expressed concern over the NPP official’s knowledge of these criminal dens, calling it dangerous and demanding that the IGP take action.
Mr. Acquaye highlighted that armed robbers pose a significant threat to society and that security agencies have been working tirelessly to apprehend and incarcerate them.
He stressed that for a national officer of a political party to admit knowing the whereabouts of such criminals is serious.
Mr. Acquaye argued that Mr. Awuku’s claim of visiting these hideouts to campaign for votes is sufficient grounds for his arrest.
He further stated that this issue transcends party politics and is a matter of national security.
Mr. Acquaye concluded that, under normal circumstances, Mr. Awuku should have reported these hideouts to the police for appropriate action as part of his call to national duty
