Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of the yet-to-be dissolved Parliament, has expressed gratitude to the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, for endorsing him to retain the role for the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The Speaker says he is humbled by the directive from the President-elect to the NDC Members of Parliament-elect to nominate him as Speaker of Parliament for the 9th House.
This follows a statement from the outfit of the President-elect to the yet-to-be sworn-in NDC caucus MPs to consider Bagbin for the position.
Mahama expressed confidence in Bagbin sharing how his experience will help shape discourse in the 9th Parliament and foster the House’s oversight responsibilities for the period in review.
In his response, the Speaker in a statement expressed gratitude to Mahama, acknowledging the enormity of the responsibility, describing it as both a profound privilege and an onerous duty.
Bagbin said he does not take the responsibility lightly, and is fully aware of its import in the democratic discourse of the country.
“I am deeply humbled by His Excellency’s confidence in my ability to lead the august House as we begin a new chapter in our nation’s democratic journey,” the statement read in some parts.
He affirmed his unwavering commitment to the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law, highlighting his experience in Parliament, and pledged to lead with integrity, transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness.
“I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead of the country,” he said.
He said his goal is to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that Parliament remains effective in responding to the needs and aspirations of Ghanaians.
The nomination marks a significant step in the transition towards the next parliamentary session, as Ghana prepares for a new phase in its governance and democratic journey.
Meanwhile, the current 8th Parliament will be dissolved on January 6, to pave the way for the new parliament and the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, January 7.
