Kudus, 22, has attracted plenty of interest with his performances for the Dutch giants.
Despite his side only coming third in last season’s Eredivisie, attacking midfielder Kudus managed to score 18 goals in all competitions.
With a move for Mason Mount having faltered due to Chelsea’s asking price, United have taken a look at Kudus as an alternative.
According to the Mail, Ajax would require a fee of around £40m to lose their star man.
Kudus has two years remaining on his contract in Amsterdam and has turned down an extension.
While United have made an initial enquiry, Brighton are in the driving seat to sign the Ghanaian star.
The Seagulls are claimed to have entered talks with Ajax over a deal, which would see them break their transfer record.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have already smashed their record once this summer, when they forked out £30m for Watford forward Joao Pedro.
Brighton have a vacancy to fill in midfield after Alexis Mac Allister joined Liverpool for £35m.
They are also in danger of losing Moises Caicedo, with Chelsea, Arsenal and United having all been linked.
Kudus’ agent Jennifer Mendelewitsch put potential suitors on red alert last month by admitting that her client would like to move this summer.
She told De Telegraaf: “I think it is best for both Ajax and Mohammed that he makes a transfer now.
“Now is the right time. He has ignored a proposal to extend his contract until the summer of 2026.
“What I can say is that after the World Cup and this season there is a lot of interest in Kudus.”
