8th Parliament is a ‘joke’, always engaged in needless arguments – Prof ‘Opanyin’ Kofi Agyekum

A professor of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Prof Kofi Agyekum commonly known as Opanyin Agyekum has said frequent involvements in needless controversies in the 8th Parliament of Ghana was not encouraging.

Reiterating a similar position expressed by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu, Professor Agyekum said the 8th Parliament has passed less legislation compared to the 7th Parliament.

Rather, he said the 8th Parliament has been frequently involved in needless controversies.

Prof Agyekum was speaking on Peace FM’s Kookrokoo morning programme on Thursday [October 24, 2024].

He said the 8th Parliament’s legislative output has been diminished and to him, the present Parliament has been involved in many playful antics, which was needless.

Touching slightly on the four seats which have been declared vacant for the intention of the affected Members of Parliament to contest the 2024 Elections in different capacities, he said it was needless to be engaged in such an argument with a few weeks to elections, when the intention of those MPs was geared towards the next Parliament.

He said the jokes in the House are too much and referenced what happened last Tuesday, where some MPs were seen singing and marching in the House.
